This bowl or plate is fired stoneware. It is glazed on one side and left unglazed on the under side, this means it needs a few extra steps taken to make sure it remains as beautiful as it is now.
How to wash your bowl or plate:
The unglazed side is porous, therefore it is best to avoid the use of soap on this side, you can use soap to clean the glazed side and warm water to clean the unglazed side. Alternatively you can clean with a bit of bicarb of soda and water.
Because of the porous underside, the first few times you wash your bowl you may get a some dark spots on the glaze, this is just moisture and will fade in a few minutes. Make sure you dry the bowl or plate well after washing. Do not put it in the dishwasher.
Pre-care of your bowl or plate:
As an optional extra precaution you can coat the unglazed side of your bowl or plate with food grade Tung Oil, this will stop the stoneware being porous and mean that you can use dish soap to clean the underside too, it will slightly darken the unglazed area.
Use of your bowl or plate
Your handmade ceramics are great for serving various different foods and snacks in, it will also make a great fruit bowl or decorative centrepiece.
Avoid putting it in the oven or on the hob. Putting hot food into is fine, as long as it's not boiling liquid or something sizzling.
The word Mahalla is used in many languages and countries meaning neighbourhood or community. Wallah, is a word best known as referring to a seller or vendor.
About Mahala Wallah
Meeting and working with all our makers personally is how we know that every unique piece meets our high standards. Our artisans all use natural materials whilst applying sustainable methods, they create the objects in the same way as they have for generations, the natural way is normal, sustainability is standard. Sustainability is super important to us throughout the whole production line. we do everything we can to keep air freight to a minimum, and are constantly reviewing options for sustainable packaging. We work with family run businesses who produce small runs of products, this means far less of an impact on the environment compared to large scale home, kitchen and garden ware, we don't work with factories. We recycle whenever local systems let us. When recycling doesn't work we get creative and are heavily involved in an eco building project using old single use plastic and bottles. We see the beauty in natural materials which our artisans work with.
The relationship between a maker and their craft creates a story, which in turn defines each unique piece at Mahala Wallah as something truly special. The traditional skills used by our suppliers have been handed down from generation to generation. We value this age-old knowledge and hope to be at the forefront of keeping the flame burning. We love the wonder in each item and the handmade nature of our products is what we believe sets us apart. We want to protect these skills and offer our artisans a window to the world.
